Health Tip #91: Eat healthier when travelling abroad or out of town by cooking your own food in an apartment hotel

I tend to eat more unhealthy food when I go on vacation than when I'm at home. It's mostly because when I'm in a new country I, of course, want to try their kind of food, even if I know it's more unhealthy than McDonald's! (Or it is simply because I just can't find any good restaurants that serves real healthy food.)

I just got back from a trip from Amsterdam, Holland. I've been there before, and I've tried their food, so this time I wanted my experience to be different. I decided to rent an apartment hotel instead of a regular hotel room to cook my own food so I could focus on eating healthy this time around.

The reason I'm writing this tip is to let you know that you can indeed be healthy when you go abroad or out of town. There are options. And I actually didn't think of this option of renting an apartment hotel until recently when I got the tip from a friend.
If you're interested in how you can be healthy during an upcoming vacation of yours - get tips on how to do it by reading here on how I did it.

PREPARATION

First of all, it was rather easy finding an apartment hotel on the web. To my surprise, it cost about the same as a hotel room! I found one that was situated only 5 minutes by walk from the central station. Very convenient! Now, finding organic food in the middle of Amsterdam was a bit of a bigger task. I should have looked it up more in advanced - I only found a regular food store, which I'm glad did have some organic foods, like organic apples.
I already prepared my stay by bringing recipes and some of my own food, for example: Tamari (organic wheat free soy sauce), organic honey and organic oats. (I also brought my Chlorella algae tablets on the trip.)

AFTER ARRIVAL
The food store was nearby (thank you, Google Maps!), so I headed to it almost immediately after arrival. I picked up organic apples, chicken filet, potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cucumber, cauliflower and ingredients for an apple dessert. I planned to bring organic spices and herbs with me, but I forgot them at home, so when I couldn't find any in the food store, I skipped using any. (Tamari became my salt during this trip!)
The main goal of my food hunting was to find food that was not processed or filled with preservatives and additives - something my goal back home always is when it comes to food.

FIRST COOKED MEAL
The first meal was to be a chicken soup with potatoes and all those vegetables I bought. To save time for other planned activites, I cooked so I could store some in the refrigerator. (This soup lasted more than 2 days!)
Afterwards I made an apple dessert from a recipe I found in a health magazine. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the results of both the dessert and the soup.
I am considering writing a tip of the dessert though, because it was very yummy and it contained no sugar! The sweet taste came from the apples and the organic honey.

AFTERTHOUGHTS
As you can see on the photos, the kitchen was fully equipped and contained everything I needed to be able to cook. The rest of the apartment was great too! The bedroom was large, and the living room (me in the picture) was awesome, with TV and free access to the internet!
It think this whole experience was very cool and unique. It was such a different feeling to come back to a "real" apartment compared to a hotel room after being out and about for a whole night.

I really recommend renting an apartment hotel if you want to be healthy and try something new at the same time when you're abroad or out of town.
Give it a try!

Hi Leo,

I think that's great, and will definitely do the hotel apartment thing next time I travel.

I didn't know that healthy food would be difficult to find in Amsterdam? I don't know much about the culture there.

Funny thing is, when I go to Italy, I always lose weight! Same thing happened when I went to Spain!
For one thing, we couldn't eat 24-7 because of that damn siesta they do! LOL Also, the portions are way smaller than in America. The only fat people I saw in both places were American and British tourists.
Check that out!

Anyway, glad you were able to have such a cool and healthy trip.
That apartment looks really cute!
I will have to take a trip over there! ;)

Fitness Diva,

I think it's mostly because I only found one food store, and that I wanted to be "super" healthy this time around. It's hard to find any restaurant in the world that are "super" healthy in their way of cooking and preparing their meals.
I should have googled health stores and likes! A lesson til next time, for sure!

Compared to the US, almost all European countries are healthy ;)!
And yes, the portions are much smaller in Europe compared to the US. This is, as everyone knows (!), one of the main reasons of obesity - overeating.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and own experiences on this!

Thanks for the info. I will definately have to check that out next time I get the chance to travel abroad. :o)

Thanks for the tips! I normally don't eat healthy when on holiday because it's difficult to find healthy food! Furthermore I always like to try new food and cuisines at the places I visit so eating healthily while traveling is really tough! But I make sure I revert back to eating healthy after the holidays! I guess it's OK not to eat healthily once in a while, as long as you don't do it everyday, no? : )

Thanks! And thanks for commenting! :)

Foongpc,
Yes, true, it's OK to eat unhealthy every now and then, but not everyday! I do it too, and I don't think it's healthy to only eat healthy 100% of the time! But, at least 90%-95% of the time for me... :)

Hi, Amsterdam is a super civilised city(and it's easy for me in the UK to get there by rail and sail). I was there recently - and appropriately - for a blogging conference, BLOG08, in October. You should have been there too! Or, next time! (Conference reviews are at my blog).

Amsterdam has several wholefood/healthfood shops and also an organic market, Overtoom Marqt, south of Leidsplein. But I agree an apartment is the best option for eating healthily - and I would love to know which one you stayed at because it sounds a good price!

I agree with the comments about massive US portion-sizes. Plus there is research to show pesticides and food additives contribute to obesity because they block the signals which tell us how hungry/sated we are. That fits with my own personal experience, but for more data, check out the work of Dr Paula Baillie-Hamilton http://www.slimmingsystems.com

RealFoodLover,
I read your conference review on your blog! You wrote down good tips that they gave... Cool!

Thank you for letting me know about the whole food stores in Amsterdam! Before arrival, I didn't really know what to google, but I will have a better clue next time I go there.
Also thanks for linking and writing about what pesticides and additives really does for you!

I stayed at Amsterdam Central
Bed and Breakfast
in their
Apartment Old Bridge. Only a 5 minute walk to supermarket Albert Heijn!

Leo excellent idea. BTW I did not know you can rent full kitchen hotel like that, very nice! When I worked my husband and me we always carried a lunch box with us of our own food. During pragnency I only gained 25 lbf, the trick was to eat good food every 2 hours, that way I did not have any crazy cravings for junk food. Thanks for sharing your story Leo, nice trip. Anna :)

Anna,
Thank you!
Yeah, I didn't know that either! But I'm glad I found out.
That's also a good idea - to bring your own lunch box to work. Then you really control everything you eat when you're out of home.
Thank you for sharing you tips during your pregnancy. :)

The pregnancy tip from Anna is a good one too. Ditto - eating a wholefood diet reduces symptoms of pre-menstrual tension. And hey, thanks for info about Amsterdam central - now filed for my next trip - and glad you liked the info on BLOG08!

RealFoodLover,
Your welcome! If you decide to choose to stay there, just let me know if you have any specific questions about it before arrival.
Thanks! :)
